Off the beaten path...

You can get more details about Oris (the brand) and this specific model on the web, so I won't repeat all that here. Some watches are very good but can be discreet/staid/boring/predictable/expected/insert adjective of choice here. Others can be flamboyant/over-the-top/flashy/interesting/unusual/insert adjective of choice here. Perhaps, there are times when those are the watches you want - if so, this will not rock your boat. This watch is just that bit off the beaten track. It's not a formal dress watch. It's not a flieger watch. It's not a dive watch. It's not really what I would call a casual watch, either. I imagine it might play any of those roles in some eyes - the big crown might be heeding a nod from fliegers, the threaded crown might nod at dive watches, the colour might lean casual etc. but none of it captures the whole aesthetic. It's like that person you know is different exactly even though they are not trying. I suppose you have to mention that deliciously curious and uncommon date pointer, which leaves a much cleaner looking dial. And that really excellent, mid-century typography. And you should also take the watch into a dark room to enjoy the lume on those cathedral hands. And yes, those cathedral hands are lovely. The bronzed case will probably weather faster, and coupled with the faded brown dial, might yield an almost patinated look. Like looking at a sepia photograph - you wonder why this person was so important that they made a photograph of him/her and find yourself wondering what they were like, what their life was like, why they look so wistful etc. And in the final analysis, maybe that is why I like this watch so much. Every time I look at it, time slows down - just a little bit. Which is a strange thing for a watch to do to you...
